[Potassium transport in Escherichia coli B. II. Dependence of the intracellular steady-state potassium concentration upon the extracellular potassium and sodium concentrations in E. coli B 525].

چکیده
The stationary intracellular potassium concentration in E. coli B 525 has been studied as a function of the extracellular potassium and sodium concentrations. The ratio of extracellular to intracellular potassium concentration is shown to be a linear function of the extracellular potassium concentration if the extracellular sodium concentration is low (20 mmoles/1). In the case of high sodium concentration (100 mmoles/1) the ratio is independent of the extracellular potassium concentration if the potassium concentration is below 1,2 mmoles/1. In order to describe the distribution of potassium uniformly over the whole range of the extracellular potassium and sodium concentrations a carrier system with two sites has to be supposed.

Ion metabolism in a potassium accumulation mutant of Escherichia coli B. I. Potassium metabolism.
A potassium transport mutant of Escherichia coli is described which is deficient in the intake of potassium. The phenotype of this mutant is characterized by (i) failure to grow in K(+)-deficient medium, (ii) failure to accumulate K(+) in K(+)-deficient medium, (iii) a steady-state intracellular K(+) that varies sigmoidally with the medium K(+) concentration, (iv) a signoidally shaped rate-conc...
متن کاملAntibacterial Effects of Monolaurin, Sorbic Acid and Potassium Sorbate on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli
Background: Food borne pathogens are of the main concerns of food producers and consumers and Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus create a lot of problems worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate antibacterial effects of monolaurin, sorbic acid and potassium sorbate on S. aureus and E. coli at different pH values and NaCl concentrations. Methods: Micro-well dilution assay was us...

The capacity of E. coli cells to regulate intracellular pH (pHi) during net potassium uptake has been investigated. The data show: (a) that cells sense their intracellular pH; (b) that the pH gradient (ApH) exerts a feedback regulation on pHj; (c) that a mechanism of regulation of pHi exists which may be independent of Na+ [Zilberstein, Agmon, Schuldiner & Padan (1982) J. Biol. Chem. 257, 3687-...
متن کاملEffect of salt concentrations on the growth of heat-stressed and unstressed Escherichia coli
The effect sodium chloride (NaCl) and potassium chloride (KCl) concentration on the growth of Escherichia coli cells cultivated at 37 and 44°C was studied in an effort to understand the importance of the salts and glucose in medium to the growth of E. coli. A turbidimetric method was used to measure the growth of E. coli after a 24 hours incubation period. The turbidimetric method used gave a h...
متن کاملIsolation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 from ground beef samples collected from beef markets, using conventional culture and polymerase chain reaction in Mashhad, northeastern Iran
Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an important human pathogen causing haemorrhagic colitis, haemolyticuraemic syndrom and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. In this study, 100 ground beef samples were collected randomly from beef markets in June 2004. For isolation of the bacteria, samples were firstly enriched in modified trypticase soy broth, followed by plating onto sorbitol MacConkey agar sup...
